My name is Sam Zeller, and I help lead Team Jakey, a nonprofit created in 2013 after the suicide death of my twin brother, Jake. Since then, our mission has been to save lives and end the stigma around mental illness and suicide by funding education, awareness, and treatment programs right here in the St. Louis area. Over the past decade, with the support of our community, we’ve raised more than $400,000 to benefit organizations like the AFSP and Provident Behavioral Health, helping to expand local resources, provide life-saving trainings, and ensure people have access to care.

At its heart, Team Jakey serves as a bridge. We know that many people struggling with mental health challenges hesitate to reach out for help, often because of fear, uncertainty, or the stigma that still surrounds mental illness. That hesitation can create a dangerous gap between the individuals who need support and the professionals who are trained to provide life-saving care.

Team Jakey works to close that gap. Through community events, awareness campaigns, and partnerships with organizations like the AFSP and Provident Behavioral Health, we create safe, approachable spaces where conversations about mental health can begin. By normalizing those conversations and fostering openness, we help individuals take the first step, from silence and fear toward connection and hope.

Once that step is taken, we help them find a pathway to specialized care. Our fundraising directly supports education, resources, and treatment programs in the St. Louis area, so that when someone is ready to reach out, the help they need is accessible.

In short, Team Jakey connects the courage to ask for help with the professionals who can provide it — turning awareness into action, and action into lives saved.
